Description

Why Go on a Pilgrimage? A Pilgrimage is about letting God surprise you and allowing the journey to grow you closer to yourself and to God. It’s about receiving gifts along the way from people, places, and even interruptions. On pilgrimage, you grow as you go. After the years of the pandemic, I was emotionally exhausted. As an extrovert without people and without in-person work, I needed to find my joy again. I needed to go on a pilgrimage. I went to Scotland in May 2022, and it changed my life. I have been on pilgrimages to Scotland before and led others to other places in Europe and Ireland, but this was a pilgrimage to my very favorite place on the planet, the island of Iona. Iona is known as a thinplace…a place where the veil between heaven and earth is thin—a place where you can experience the presence of the Divine. St. Columba landed on Iona with his 12 monks to start a community in 563 AD. That means people have prayed on Iona for almost 1500 years – you can feel this when you step off the Ferry! Join me September 1 – 9, 2025, for a Finding Your Thinplace Pilgrimage to Scotland. We will be on the Island Iona from September 1-9 staying at the beautiful St. Columba Hotel and eating excellent gourmet food together. We will take walks around the island out to the beautiful beaches and discover the magic of the people and the place through field trips to local artists and time at the Abbey of Iona. Discover the unforced rhythms of grace with a group of pilgrims seeking rest and restoration. Rediscover yourself and make Iona one of your favorite places, too. Experience God in a place of Great Beauty Pray where people have prayed for almost 1500 years. Eat good food, sit, and enjoy the view. Have time for rest Have time to explore Have time to create, write, walk, and just BE! Example Day: Breakfast together * Morning Gathering and Experience and Practice * Lunch on your Own (or included in field trip experience) * Afternoon Gathering * Field Trips to artists and craftspeople on the island * Hikes around Iona * Time at the Beach (we will walk to several of Iona’s stunning beaches during our time together) * Time to Rest * Dinner together * Evening Fireside Sessions * 9 pm Abbey Worship (optional) * Bed What is a Finding Your Thinplace Retreat?
